Dynamic vs Static QR Codes
One type you can edit, track, and update forever. The other is set in stone the moment you print it.
Dynamic QR Codes
The destination URL is stored on a server. The code itself contains a short redirect link that never changes.
- ✓ Change the destination after printing — no reprint needed
- ✓ Track every scan: location, time, device type
- ✓ See scan counts per day, week, month
- ✓ Pause or redirect to a different URL instantly
- ✓ Codes keep working forever — even if you cancel your plan
- ✓ Add logos, colours, and custom designs
Static QR Codes
The destination URL is encoded directly into the QR code pattern. Nothing is stored on a server.
- ✗ Cannot be changed after printing
- ✗ No scan tracking or analytics
- ✗ No way to know if the code is being used
- ✓ Works without any third-party service
- ✓ Good for permanent content (WiFi passwords, vCards)
- ✓ Slightly faster to scan (no redirect)
When to use each type
Most business use cases benefit from dynamic codes. Static codes suit a narrow set of scenarios.
Use dynamic codes for…
Marketing campaigns
Track which print run, poster, or flyer is generating scans. Redirect to a seasonal landing page without reprinting.
Product packaging
Update the destination to a new product page, a video, or a promotion — the code on the box stays the same.
Restaurant menus
Update your menu URL whenever the menu changes. No new QR code, no new table stickers.
Business cards & signage
Change the landing page after the cards are printed. See exactly how many people scanned your card at an event.
Use static codes for…
WiFi access
WiFi credentials are static by nature. A static code works here and requires no server.
One-time documents
Archival PDFs, internal documents, or anything that will genuinely never change and doesn't need tracking.
Offline environments
Locations with no internet access where a redirect server can't be reached (rare in practice).
Common questions
Do dynamic QR codes stop working if the company shuts down?
This is the biggest risk of dynamic codes. At Guru QR, your codes keep redirecting forever — even if you cancel your plan or, in the unlikely event we ever close, we'll publish a migration tool so you can move your codes before the service ends.
Are dynamic QR codes slower to scan?
The redirect adds roughly 50–150ms. In practice, this is imperceptible — the camera-to-content journey is dominated by the time it takes to open the destination page, not the redirect.
Can I convert a static code to dynamic?
No. Once a static code is printed, it's fixed. The pattern itself encodes the destination. You'd need to create a new dynamic code and reprint the material.
Does Guru QR support both types?
Yes. All codes on Guru QR are dynamic by default (full tracking, editable destination). For WiFi and vCard types, the content is stored in the code as a standard payload — Guru QR still tracks scan counts even for these.
